This is one of the oldest Engineering professions being taught in Government Polytechnic for Women, Tharamani, ever since its inception in 1962. The course was initially a two-year certificate course which was raised to a three-year Diploma Course in Civil Engineering in 1963. When re-organization of Polytechnic course was taken up in 1972, the Semester System was introduced and the course now functions as a Four Semester Diploma Course in Civil Engineering after completion of the first year of study.

Objective of the Course

To train women in securing a professional status as Civil Engineers and to equip them with sound knowledge of Civil Engineering practice to work in Civil Engineering firms and allied industries.

Duration of the Course

Three years of which first year is common, followed by 4 Semesters. Duration of each Semester is 14 Weeks and each Year consists of 2 Semesters.

Examinations conducted by the Autonomous Board are to be taken at the end of each Semester and Students may go on to the next Semester irrespective of the number of subjects in which they have failed. They could appear for those subjects in the subsequent examination.

Job Opportunities

Diploma holders are taken as Draughts Women, Assistants and Junior Engineers in Government Department like P.W.D, Highways, Housing Board, M.M.D.A., T.W.A.D. Board etc., and in Private Organizations.

Note: The nomenclature of Diploma in Civil Engineering has been changed as Diploma in Civil Engineering (Architecture) to fulfill World Bank norms to start a new course.
